Home damage
What documents you need
- Insurance policy
- Damage photos (before and after)
- Repair quote
- Police/fire service report (if needed)
- Ownership or lease details
Process
Notify your insurance company immediately. Gather photos, receipts, and repair quotes. If the damage is from a natural disaster, check whether state aid programmes are available.
Insured property
If your home is insured, notify your insurance company immediately. Check what your policy covers (flood, fire, earthquake, theft) and keep your policy number to hand.
Uninsured property / Natural disaster
If there is no insurance or the damage was caused by a natural disaster (flood, earthquake, wildfire), check whether a state aid programme is available through your municipality or region. The application is usually submitted at your local municipality.
Rental property
If you are a tenant, check whether the landlord's insurance covers the damage. For personal belongings (furniture, electronics), you need your own contents insurance. Notify the landlord in writing.
Before starting repairs
- Take photos and videos before moving or cleaning anything.
- Keep damaged items until an assessment is completed.
- Get a written repair estimate from a technician.
- If the damage is due to theft, vandalism or fire, report it to the police or fire service.
Notification deadlines
Most insurance policies require prompt notification (typically within 2 working days). Delays may be grounds for the insurer to reject the claim. Check the terms of your policy.
Frequently asked questions
What do I do if the insurer rejects my claim?
Request a written explanation. You can file an objection, contact the Consumer Ombudsman, or consult a lawyer.
What documents do I need for state aid?
Typically you need your ID, E9 property declaration, damage photos, a certificate from the municipality or fire service, and an application submitted to the municipality.
Can I start repairs before the inspection?
If possible, wait. If the repair is urgent (e.g. risk of collapse), take detailed photographs first and keep the damaged materials.
